Seventeen Magazine: Question & Answer with Matt Czuchry

In Seventeen this month, Eight Legged Freaks star and It Boy Matt Czuchry spilled that he grew up in rural Tennessee and his family owns several goats. How's this country boy enjoying Hollywood? Read on to find out.

What's your family like?

I have two older brothers and an older sister, so I really kind of have five parents. They were all really great to me. My dad is professor of business, my brother is a professor of psychology, my other brother is in computers and my sister has her Master's and lives in Germany. Sometimes I feel like the black sheep of my family. But they are all really supportive because they know I'm passionate about it. When I was trying to decide what I wanted to do, they all said, "Do something you love." They definitely gave me a kick in the butt to go do it.

What do you do for fun?

I love basketball. I like to be competitive. In that way, it's healthy that I can get it all out so I'm not like that around friends or on auditions. It allows me to be more laid back. I'll go to random parks and pick up games. Be the outsider. It's like therapy.

Are you into the Hollywood scene?

I love doing that once in a while. It's fun to be surrounded by people who are doing the same thing I am. Movies are magical. I love going to the movie theater and getting popcorn and Diet Coke. I get star struck. But I prefer to just hang out by myself or go to the movies or play basketball.

How would your friends describe you?

That I was there for them. I put other people first. I'm trying to find the balance of putting other people first and also taking care of myself. That's what makes me feel good but you can't do that all time.

You and Kate Bosworth [Blue Crush] have been dating for two years. What's that like?

I'm a relationship type. It's like having a backbone of a rock. My style is to be with someone, to have a friendship with them. I don't go out and mess around. I don't have a problem if that works for someone else, but that doesn't fulfil me. I want to go hang out, go to the movies, or have someone to bounce ideas off of.

Did you start dating on the set of Young Americans?

Kate is someone who lights up the room. She has this energy and you know she's a great person. I'm attracted to people with goodness. I couldn't believe that she would take me up on my offer and hang out with me. It was on set.

What about love scenes with other actors -- is that hard for you guys?

It does suck. It was new to me at first, but we are pretty cool with it now. We had to work through that on both ends. It's tricky. It made us stronger and now I think we're over that hurdle. She's a very talented actress. I want nothing more than for her to pursue that talent. I will definitely be queasy and hate it, but I will definitely watch it all the way through. And I will definitely be proud of her after.

In poche parole.... [italiane]:

HOLLYWOOD - When college senior Matt Czuchry of Johnson City, Tenn., sat down with his parents to break the news he wanted to be an actor, he was the one to point out it might not be a good idea.
"I was actually the one saying I should go on to law school," Czuchry recalls. "They were the ones who told me I should go ahead and act."

His parents knew best. Last year, he was cast in the pivotal role of Logan Huntzberger on the family drama "The Gilmore Girls."

Logan is the blue-blooded beau of central character Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel). "Gilmore" launched its new season last Tuesday and continues tonight.

The role was intended to be short term. But here he is, walking the red carpet, having photographers yell out his name and setting the hearts of WB viewers aflutter.

"Gilmore" is the first established hit of which Czuchry has been a part. The romance between Logan and Rory even landed him the cover of TV Guide in recent months.

"To come into ('Gilmore') and be a part of that was very surreal and fantastic in the same time," he says. "The day-to-day aspects of my life have been the same, but it's the exterior things that have changed.

"It's things like being recognized or being on the cover of TV Guide. These are kind of large things that you can never prepare for. They just kind of happen. It's a beautiful thing but life is not all about those things."

Czuchry's overnight fame comes after years of struggling as just another actor in Hollywood.

His first acting gig was saying two lines on the short-lived WB series "Opposite Sex." His resume is filled with brief roles on briefer shows such as "Jake 2.0," Hack," "Young Americans" and "Freaks and Geeks."

There were years of leanness, when the parts weren't coming, and Czuchry looked to be another statistic of actors who would not make it.

"I was lucky to always be an actor out here," he says. "I was always able to do things here or there just to keep my head above water."

Financial support from his parents also kept him from having to become just another waiter in Hollywood with big dreams.

"I have a little bit of debt left" to pay back the folks, he says. "I have a little bit more to go, but after six years I am finally paying them off."

When he auditioned for the role of Logan, he was already a fan of the show, and he says that helped him nail the part.

"I knew from my audition scene that (Logan) was going to be the opposite of Rory, and I knew (how to play) that," he says.

Logan is "about everything in the moment, no matter what it is," he says. "Whatever feels right, he does. He's not a slacker. He's sort of naturally gifted in school. He feels immortal."

Fans, at least at first, saw Logan as being "arrogant," says Czuchry, and maybe the character was not the best guy for the lovelorn Rory. That seems to have changed as last season progressed.

"When you play one of these parts - as a boyfriend - it can be for one episode or two, but in his case it's a second season," says "Gilmore" star Lauren Graham, who plays Lorelai Gilmore.

"He's made his mark as a good actor. He's someone very special. He made that nice impact, and that's why he is still on the show."

The 28-year-old bachelor shies away from fan sites on the Internet, though his mother reports back to him what she sees. "I'm like, 'Oh, Mom! No!' " he says, laughing.

His father, Dr. Andy Czuchry, is a professor at East Tennessee State University. His mother, Sandra, is a homemaker. Their three other children work in the fields of academics and business.

During his days at Science Hill High School, Matt's "main passion" was tennis. Johnson City is "such a supportive community. That's why it is so special. That's why it still feels so much like home."

Czuchry attended the College of Charleston in South Carolina, where he studied history and political science. It was there Czuchry gave in to the temptation to take acting classes.

"It caught me a little bit by surprise," says his father. "I said if he had a passion (for acting) and wanted to do that, then we'd help any way that we can."

So why did his parents throw their support to Czuchry's dream when even he was not convinced it was a good idea?

"Matt has a high work ethic," his father says. "We figured if anybody could do this, Matt could."

Dunque... l'ultima intervista a Matt in 'poche parole':

SPOILER (click to view)
SPOILER (click to view)

SPOILER (click to view)
Week end a casa.

That's all Folks!
